Thanks for this opportunity Delmira! HR has a hard line to travel between the employee and management, however personally I feel that being honest, fair and consistent are the defining factors of a "good HR Professional". I don't think that employees honestly believe that life (at work or personal) will always go "their way"...but if they know that they will be treated fairly on a consistent basis a level of trust will be created rather easily. You are correct, many organizations do not feel that they need to worry about their employees beliefs...so very sad for those organizations that loose this touch. Funny thing tough, those organizations that listen the most tend to have the highest levels of employee satisfaction (notice I didn't say made the most $$$...but those numbers tend to have a heavy correlation here as well). I have a strong belief that even mammoth organizations can have a "small firm" feel to them if managed in a certain way. You bring up a really good point because smaller, more flexible organizations have shown that they can stand the test of time, and even re-invent themselves faster than gigantic behemoths that loose touch with their employees. Thank you for sharing!

Great Post, but help me to understand how the employees can tell their HR is trustworthy, and doing a good job. A few emails received from the HR department, and a flu shot, does not convince me they are working in everyone's best interest. My findings thus far indicates HR is generally working on how they are perceived by management and not how their customers, the employees, rank their performance. I also notice that the larger companies rarely poll their employees for their input on how they feel HR is handling matters. What would your suggestions be?

Sounds like this Senior Manager needs immediate intervention! Possibly some Anger Management sessions to start off wtih. Then follow that up with some indepth training on Emotional Intelligence and "contemporary" Leadership. Make sure he understands that his old school style of dictatorship and intimidation will never make him a successful leader in today's workplace. There is no excuse for this type of behavior - unless your 3 years old! So get a grip or get out.

I am pretty sure I have lived this life- once upon a time. It is really tough when you are supposed to be the person who can help, but can not get an immediate solution. The situation I was in was rectified only after several casualities, including me. But I learned from it... and that's what counts.

I'm not sure if "control" is likely, however, "impact" for sure - positively and negatively. Think about the about the way that social media has impacted the HR profession. Rather, think about how social media has impacted the HR professionals actually participating in the HR/social media realm. These individuals, whether actually transparent or not, are putting themselves out there rather than being the silent, behind the scenes, chained to a desk administrators of our past. My own experience presenting myself differently when it comes to HR has led to new career opportunities because the view of my overall impact is perceived much greater. I choose to put myself out there every day and for me, it has been great experience. While all of this is in my opinion a step in the right direction, I still do not think we will ever get to the point where we no longer have a negative perception or misunderstanding about what HR really does for business. There is a longstanding less than stellar reputation of HR, whether misconstrued or not, that will continue to be very difficult to overcome. However, we seem to be moving in the right direction. Those of us that continue to work hard every day and show the true value of HR can make a difference. We just need to have much more recognition for executive HR individuals out there who are making a positive impact on the profession. Great post Rob. Really got me thinking this morning!
